NASCAR season is full swing — this is part 1 of a series in which I talk to NASCAR drivers about their take on cars — on and off the track.
Juan Pablo Montoya drives the #42 Target Chevrolet Impala for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Currently, he is in 13th place. Montoya was born in Bogata, Colombia and has also raced in CART, and Formula One for McLaren Mercedes and BMW Williams. He began competing in NASCAR in the 2007 season.
When did you become interested in driving cars? I became interested at a very young age. I was like 5 years old when I started racing go-karts and was hooked on going fast ever since then.
Was there someone in your family who was particularly interested in cars? My dad raced go-karts so that’s what drew me to it.
What is the #1 skill required to be a good race car driver?
That depends on what series you’re racing in and what track you’re at. I don’t think there is one skill that’s required over another. It’s a combination of a bunch of things. Patience, knowing how to handle a race car, the relationship between you and your crew, understanding the technology behind the cars.
Is there another sport that is similar to NASCAR? I’ve raced in several different racing leagues and there is nothing that compares to NASCAR. It’s the best racing in the world. No other sport allows you to race on an even playing field every weekend. It’s a combination of driver and the car that gets you to victory lane.
What tracks do you prefer? I’ll tell you the truth; I don’t really prefer one of the other. Which might surprise people considering my performance on road-courses. I like each track in a slightly different way.
Are you involved in other kind of businesses? No, when I’m not racing I’m spending time with my family.
Team Owner Chip Ganassi, Organization Receive Nods for Sports Executive, Professional Sports Team of the Year
CONCORD, N.C. (May 12, 2011) — After a banner 2010 that included a sweep of America’s biggest auto racing events, NASCAR race team owner Chip Ganassi and his organization are among the nominees at next week’s Fourth Annual Sports Business Awards.
Ganassi is the first race team executive to be nominated for Sports Executive of the Year, and Chip Ganassi Racing Teams is the second race team to receive a Professional Sports Team of the Year nomination. The awards, given by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal, honor excellence in sports business and will be announced next Wednesday, May 18 in New York City.
Ganassi and his racing organization operate teams in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and the IndyCar Series. In 2010, the teams had unparalleled success, both on and off the race track.
On the competition side, Ganassi became the first owner in the history of American auto racing to win the so-called Triple Crown with victories in the Daytona 500, the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. Early in 2011, Ganassi added a fourth prestigious win, the GRAND-AM Rolex 24 at Daytona, to hold all four titles at the same time ? another first. Ganassi Racing ended the 2010 season with a team-record 19 wins and two series championships.
On the business side, Chip Ganassi Racing Teams was once again at or near the top of the motorsports world when it came to bringing in new corporate partners and sponsorship revenue. They were able to renew 100 percent of their 2010 expiring sponsorship deals for 2011 and beyond. In addition, the team was able to add a number of major blue-chip partners to their sponsorship stable, including McDonald’s and Unilever.
"The accomplishments of Chip Ganassi and his race organization on the race track last year were not surprising, and the honor is very much deserved," said Steve Phelps, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of NASCAR. "Chip and his entire organization are great representatives of NASCAR and American auto racing, which is why their success on the race track translates so well with corporate partners."
For Sports Executive of the Year nomination, Ganassi is in company with George Bodenheimer of ESPN/ABC Sports; David Levy of Turner Sports; Kevin Plank of Under Armour and Pat Riley of the Miami Heat. For Professional Sports Team of the Year, Chip Ganassi Racing Teams joins the New York Jets, the Orlando Magic, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Francisco Giants.

Ganassi Earns Two Sports Business Awards Nominations

Juan Montoya has won two Sprint Cup Series races in 155 starts. Both of his wins have come on road courses, while he still continues his quest to win on an oval race track.
Montoya compares to the Jacksonville Jaguars of the NFL for his constant mediocre performances. Only once has he qualified for the Chase, and the rest of the time Montoya has been good but not great.
That is just like the Jaguars. In 17 seasons of competition, the Jaguars have reached the playoffs six times but have never reached a Super Bowl. Much like Montoya, the Jaguars have at times looked good but have never taken it to the next level.
DARLINGTON, S.C. – Did feuding drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Ryan Newman scuffle in the NASCAR hauler prior to Sprint Cup practice Friday at Darlington Raceway?
If they didn’t, neither is denying it. Then again, neither is confirming it.
Neither driver showed any lingering physical signs of an altercation, and Montoya and Newman both declined to talk about the specifics of what happened in the hauler as reporters crowded around them following qualifying Friday for the Showtime Southern 500.
“I don’t know – ask him,” Montoya said after being asked if he was punched by Newman. “I could tell you either way, couldn’t I? I could make something up. Let’s leave it at that.”
Newman was asked about the rumor that he punched Montoya and he said: “That’s just speculation.”
NASCAR said the issue might not be over between the two drivers, upset with each other over contact during last week’s race at Richmond International Raceway. Montoya eventually spun out Newman.
"NASCAR did meet with Ryan Newman and Juan Pablo Montoya today before the first Sprint Cup Series practice,” NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said in a statement. “The drivers were given their final warning and are fully aware that we will be watching this very closely.
“The meeting didn't go as well as we had hoped it would and we're not completely through with this issue."
Newman said he would continue to race hard.
“It was fine,” the Stewart-Haas Racing driver said. “With conflict, everybody has varying opinions. I just am going to try to put the whole situation past us and move on to this weekend’s race. … It’s just a matter of getting through it.
“Neither of us want to cost each other points, neither of us want to make any more conflict. It’s just a matter of going forward and having a little bit more respect for each other on the race track, I guess. He’s got a different opinion than I do, and that’s the bottom line.”

Juan Pablo Montoya, driver of the No. 42 Target Chevrolet, made a guest appearance on SPEED Channel’s Trackside Live at Darlington Raceway.
Montoya joined Steve Byrnes, Larry McReynolds, Jeff Hammond, and Darrell Waltrip on the show as they gear up for the Showtime Southern 500 on the track that is "Too Tough to Tame".
Montoya spoke about the upcoming Energizer promotion at the All-Star race. In celebration of their 16 year partnership, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing has teamed up with Energizer to "Light Up The Night" at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Challenge on May 21st. Energizer hopes to help fans set a world record for shining the most flashlights simultaneously at a sporting event. Thousands for LED headlights will be distributed as fans are asked to shine them during pre-race festivities.
