NASCAR DRIVERS VISIT CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL
BY Vivian Nweze, FOX 35 NEWS
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - NASCAR legends Rusty Wallace, Michael Waltrip, and Juan Pablo Montoya took their racing skills to a new track Thursday while driving awareness for the Help Win the Race for Life campaign at Florida Hospital for Children's Walt Disney Pavilion.
The drivers raced remote controlled cars with kids as part of a special announcement and to push for awareness about umbilical cord blood banking and transplantation. This life saving option will soon be available at Florida Hospital. "As the only pediatric stem and bone marrow transplant program in Central Florida, we know how important it is for patients to have access to life-saving treatments," said Marla Silliman, administrator of the Walt Disney Pavilion at Florida hospital for Children.
Umbilical cord blood is normally thrown away after birth, but advanced medical therapies now allow this small amount of blood to save lives. It's used to treat over 70 diseases like Leukemia, sickle cell anemia, and other blood diseases. To increase the availability in the Central Florida community Florida Hospital is partnering with CORD: USE , a leader in cord blood banking. Together, CORD: USE and Florida Hospital will be offering expecting mothers the option to donate their umbilical cord blood for no charge. All cord blood donated by Florida Hospital patients will help build the National Cord Blood Inventory (NCBI).
